Ben Schott has a few great little books of miscellany. He also recently penned a piece for the New York Times about Twitter. He compared it to telegraphy where there was a cost per word so code words were used to reduce complex sentences into single words for privacy, cost and brevity.
He suggested people could reprise these codes and start tweeting in code.
